What is Scar Away™
The treatment of scars has been of great interest to plastic surgeons, hospitals, and burn centers for many years. Since the discovery of the tremendous benefits of silicone in the treatment of scars in the early 1980's, studies have been conducted to find what type of silicone is the most effective.
While creams, gels, and liquids have entered the market with some success, over-all they tend to be messy, malodorous, and lack in effectiveness. Commonly asked questions about Scar Away™ and Silicone Scar Care
What is ScarAway™? ScarAway contains 12 silicone scar sheets that are indicated for use in prevention and reduction of raised and discolored scars. Silicone Sheet technology is clinically proven to significantly improve the appearance of scars, and has been used by plastic surgeons and burn centers for years. Each thin ScarAway sheet is lined on one side with silicone. The other side is lined with silky smooth fabric which makes it convenient to wear, even under clothing.
How does ScarAway™ work to prevent or minimize scarring? ScarAway sheets use patented Silon®* technology Invented by Bio Med Sciences, Inc., and are believed to mimic the natural barrier function of healthy skin. Research suggests that Silon acts to hydrate scar tissue which in turn works to soften scar tissue, reducing its development and causing it to fade away faster.
Can I use ScarAway™ on old my old (existing) scar? YES! ScarAway works on both old and new scars to soften, fade, reduce and smooth out your scar so it appears closer to your skin's natural color. ScarAway is even effective on scars that are years old.
When should I begin using ScarAway™? You may begin using ScarAway as soon as the wound is healed and there is no oozing or crusting at the site. Treatment with ScarAway for post surgical wounds may typically begin approximately 1 week after stitches are removed. (or when cleared by your physician or surgeon for use.)
What types of scars does ScarAway™ work on? ScarAway works on hypertrophic scars and keloids, which have a raised and discolored appearance. These types of scars may result from surgical procedures, skin injuries and burns.
How do I apply ScarAway™?
1. Wash and dry existing scar or newly healed wound area.
2. Remove ScarAway sheet from plastic protective backing. (You may save backing for storage of ScarAway sheet when not in use)
3. Apply sheet with adhesive side directly on scar. Sheet should cover beyond the scarred area on all sides. You may trim ScarAway sheets to size for smaller scars (trim the sheet prior to removing from liner) or use ScarAway sheets side by side for larger scars.
4. Remove sheet and wash daily with mild soap and water and pat dry.Use each ScarAway sheet for 7 days. After 7 days, discard old sheet and replace with new one.
IMPORTANT: Do not use on open wounds or unhealed skin.
How long should I wear each sheet? Each ScarAway sheet should be worn a minimum of 12 hours per day. Each sheet should be be worn for 7 days.
Can I use ScarAway™ on any part of my body? Yes, when used as directed, ScarAway silicone sheets can be used on any part of the body
How long will it take before I notice an effect and for how long do I need to use ScarAway? With a pre-existing scar, you can expect to notice a softening of the scar tissue within the first few days. Improvement in scar color and thickness may be seen in as little as 4 weeks and will improve gradually over the treatment period. Maximum results will be achieved after consistent use for 12 weeks. Individual results may vary.
